1963 –   Tom Paine Award

1963 – Bob Dylan is given a Tom Paine Award by the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee at their annual dinner at New York’s Hotel Americana. However, in his acceptance speech Dylan questions the ECLC’s objectives and even says he understands why Kennedy was shot. He later apologizes for his remarks.

1970 -Honorary Doctorate of Music –  Princeton University, New Jersey

— Bob Dylan’s lyrics have been taught in universities and debated at academic conferences. Not bad for a college dropout who railed, in “Tombstone Blues” against too much “useless and pointless knowledge.”

Well, the times they are a-changin’.

Dylan, dressed in a black academic gown, was awarded an honorary doctorate Wednesday by Scotland’s oldest university.

The University of St. Andrews said it was making Dylan, 63, an honorary Doctor of Music in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to musical and literary culture.”

The times really are a changin’. Bob Dylan, the anti-establishment folk music hero of the ’60’s, was honored on Saturday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., along with actor Charlton Heston, actress Lauren Bacall, opera singer Jessye Norman, and dancer Edward Villella before the President and the likes of Newt Gingrich (R-GA).

As with the rest of the honorees, Dylan was not required to speak or perform. According to reports, Dylan aided the selection of who would honor him from the band to the songs. Dylan chose producer and musician Don Was to play bass, E.G. Smith on mandolin, Steve Jordan on drums, and Clifford Carter on keyboard, for the back up band for artists Bruce Springsteen, who sang “The Times They Are A Changin’,” singer David Ball, who performed “Don’t Think Twice,” and gospel singer Shirley Ceasar, who sang “You Got To Serve Somebody.

The University of St Andrews made Bob Dylan a Doctor of Music at this year’s summer graduation ceremony on Wednesday.

Dylan has only ever accepted one other honorary degree – from Princeton University in 1970.

2008 – Pulitzer Prize Special Citations and Awards

Bob Dylan was awarded with the special citation on Monday, April 7, making history as the first rock and roll artist to be honored. Singer, songwriter, author, musician, and poet, was recognized for his “profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.”

2010 – National Medal for the Arts

The National Medal of Arts is an award and title created by the United States Congress in 1984, for the purpose of honoring artists and patrons of the arts. A prestigious American honor, it is the highest honor specifically given for achievement in the arts conferred to an individual artist on behalf of the people.

2012 – Presidential Medal of Freedom

The Medal of Freedom is awarded each year to individuals who have contributed to the security or national interest of the U.S., world peace or to “cultural and other significant endeavors,” according to the White House. Among the other recipients President Obama honored today were former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, Israeli President Shimon Peres, author Toni Morrison, civil rights campaigner and National Farm Workers Association co-founder Dolores Huerta and astronaut John Glenn.

President Barack Obama honoured Bob Dylan at the White House on Tuesday, saying there was “not a bigger giant in the history American music” than the diminutive folk singer.

2013 – The Order of Légion d’Honneur

The French government has presented US singer Bob Dylan with the country’s highest award, the Legion of Honour, in a brief ceremony in Paris.

Presenting him with the award, Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti said he was a hero for young people hungry for justice and independence.

Dylan has famously never liked being used as a spokesman for other people’s causes, a BBC correspondent reports.
